Significant Dates and Anniversaries of the Holy Cross Sisters
1844 Fr. Theodosius Florentini, Capuchin, meets Katharina Scherer (later to become Mother Theresa Scherer) in Altdorf, Switzerland. They became co-founders of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross (AKA Holy Cross Sisters).
1852 Mother Theresa Scherer arrives in Chur, Switzerland, to establish the Holy Cross Hospital
1856 Holy Cross Sisters establish a Motherhouse in Ingenbohl, Switzerland
1857 Perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament begins at the Ingenbohl Motherhouse
1860 Bohemian Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1865 Fr. Theodosius Florentini dies February 15
1868 Slavonian (Croatian) Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1870 Province of Styria (Carinthia) of Holy Cross Sisters established
1872 Moravian Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1878 Pope Leo XIII praises and recommends the Holy Cross Sisters
1886 Mother Theresa Scherer re-elected superior general under new Constitutions
1887 Mother Theresa dies June 16
1895 Baden-Hohenzollern Province (Germany) of Holy Cross Sisters established
1904 Tirol-Vorarlberg Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1912 First US mission of Holy Cross Sisters establish St. Joseph Hospital in Dickinson, ND
1913 Provinces established in Hungary and Lower Austria
1920 St. Clement School, Haymarsh, ND, and Hessoun Orphanage, Fenton, MO, established
1921 St. Joseph Hospital, Breese, IL, transferred to Holy Cross Sisters
1923 New US Provincial House established in Merrill, Wisconsin
1926 Holy Cross Hospital, Merrill, WI, established
1927 Slovakia Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1930 Italian Province of Holy Cross Sisters established
1936 Our Lady of the Holy Cross High School (for women), Scott Mansion, Merrill, WI, established
1951 Our Lady of Peace Apostolate, Vacherie, Louisiana, established
1963 Our Lady of Peace Apostolate, Luling, Louisiana, established
1968 Holy Cross Junior College, Merrill, WI, established
1968 Baton Rouge diocesan Liturgy Office established by S. Maria Theodosia and S. Joelle Mauer.
1981 Holy Cross Center for Spiritual Growth, Merrill, WI, established
1983 Holy Cross Sisters established a formalized program which invited interested persons into a new relationship with the sisters. It was known as a Co-Member's Program which was later changed to the Associate Program.
1984 The beginning of the Liturgy and Music Direction aat St. Ambrose Cathedral in Des Moines, Iowa.
1990 Bell Tower Residence for the elderly established in Merrill, WI
2005 Major building and remodeling project at Bell Tower Residence and new provincial office building and Sisters Housing started.
2006 Completion of the building projects and relocating into the new buildings.
2006 150th Anniversary of the Founding of the Sisters of Mercy of the Holy Cross
2007 Holy Cross Sisters USA Province Drop Age Restriction
