Sister Dorothy Leading Pastoral Care Department

Sister Dorothy Niemann presents the San Damiano Cross to Dr., Mrs. Renato Rivera in a Blessing for Mission at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese prior to their trip to the Phillipines.

Sister Dorothy Niemann not only serves on the leadership team of the Holy Cross Sister's USA Province based in Merrill, WI, but she also serves as a Certified Chaplain and Department Director at St. Joseph's Hospital in Breese, Illinois.

Sister Dorothy is originally from Breese and has served as the hospital's Pastoral Care Director since 2001. She returned to Clinton County from Dickinson State University and in the Parish Nurse Ministry at St. Wenceslaus Parish, both in Dickinson, ND.

A certified chaplain since 2004, Sister Dorothy previously worked in nursing, hospice, Quality Assurance and Risk Management at St. Joseph's Hospital and Health Center in Dickinson; and in nursing at Good Samaritan, formerly Holy Cross Hospital in Merrill, WI.

At St. Joseph's Hospital the Pastoral Care staff offers spiritual support to patients through their presence, prayer and empathetic listening and assists patients and families in clarifying value issues, dealing with ethical concerns and completing advanced directives.

They provide a spiritual presence to those who are dying and their family members, and at other times of crisis, and additionally lead religious rituals and worship services such as blessing, memorial services and other special prayer services.

Sister Dorothy Niemann (far left) asked God’s blessing “on this new building, the various areas of service and on those who work and minister here” during a Nov 28 ceremony at the new St. Joseph’s Hospital HealthPlex in Breese, IL. Attending were administrative staff, Dave Neighbors, MD, whose practice, Competitive Edge Sports Medicine, is in the new facility, and employees from Physical Therapy, Cardio-Pulmonary Rehab, Senior Renewal and Athletes Advantage whose departments are in the HealthPlex. Following the responsive readings, Sister blessed the building and the new crucifix in the lobby, then distributed Holy Water to representatives from each department to honor their areas and new crosses.
